Going to Mysore

topic posted Tue, September 4, 2007 - 7:11 PM by  David
Hello all you burning Ashtangis. I just got back from Black Rock City and am off to dinner with some new playa friends. So in the spirit of friendship and sharing, I give you this bouquet of parentheses {{{{{}}}}}} (by way of JD Salinger), and I ask you to share your thoughts and knowledge of Mysore. I am planning to go in December and stay through March. Has anyone been this summer (after Guruji's illness)? What's it like at the shala now? Who's the person to contact to get a ride from Bangalore? Good places to stay, to eat? What to bring, what not? Words of encouragement, discouragement? How about workshops in Goa? Bike, scooter or feet? Rock, paper or scissors? I am grateful for any response.
love to all of you,
David

i just returned home after 2 months in mysore and i loved the entire experience! guruji occasionally led the friday/sunday led class, which was always a blessing, but he wasn't doing any adjustments. he would also occasionally forget an asana and sharath would correct him, which added a little bit of confusion and awkwardness to the class. guruji would also occasionally come out during mysore practices and watch or lead the opening chant, but sharath is really running the show. saraswathi is also there to help sharath with adjustments and backbends. the shala was super busy, probably because of guruji's birthday. saraswathi also has her own students who arrive after all of sharath’s students (~7:30am). don't forget to send your registration application form (on AYRI web site).

i always took the train or a bus between bangalore and mysore (much cheaper than a car. the express bus is terrific – takes ~3 hours and only stops once and costs ~$3 – it leaves from the long-distance bus terminal, across the street from the train station, every 15 minutes or so). if you want to take a car, you can contact murthy for arrangements or for accommodation - his contact info is on the AYRI web site. i'd suggest you ask him to show you a couple of places when you get there instead of arranging ahead of time - there's quite a range of quality. the only problem is that i would expect it to be quite busy in december, so you may not have much in the way of choices. you can also contact ganesh for a ride - i don't have his contact info handy - will try to get it for you. lots of people use shiva for accommodation, but i never got on the shiva bandwagon.

i think sharath is teaching in goa in december.

rolf & marci are also teaching in goa beginning in october and i think they are well worth a few weeks of practice if you can swing it. you can find them on the ashtanga.com web site or here:

i spent my last 2 weeks in india in auroville, near pondicherry, practicing with monica. It was a totally different experience – a very small class, lots of adjustments and a very quiet region. it was a nice change of pace, but accommodation is more expensive and there is a lot less socializing. i read the entire book “shantaram” in 2 weeks…

    have a terrific trip!

oh, and for food - tina's for breakfast! shakti house also does good breakfast, but i prefer tina's. ask the other students how to find them.

there are lots of places for good lunch & dinner, home cooking geared for yoga students. anu's is the easiest because no reservations needed. once you're in mysore you'll hear about all the others - shaila's, three sisters (in lakshmipuram), chakra house, etc.

see, now you've gotten me all nostalgic and i can't seem to stop with the advice!

i forgot to mention - i'm all about the scooter. a bicycle would be great for getting around gokulam, but with a scoot you can get into town super quickly. no need for a motorcycle unless you plan to go long distances. a lot of people just use rickshaws. but there's nothing quite like scootin' around wearing flipflops and no helmet (although police have started giving tickets for not wearing helmets, so i recommend wearing one when you go out of gokulam). mysore traffic is pretty mellow, and gokulam is an easy place to get used to driving. you can arrange a scoot when you get there.

what to bring? you really don't need anything besides what you'd bring on vacation. gokulam is pretty modern and has lots of amenities - plenty of grocers and pharmacies to buy pretty much anything you need. ganesh at anu's or tina can tell you where to find pretty much anything you can't find on your own. our apartment had all the cookware we needed, but you can buy pots & pans, linens, bath towels for pretty cheap if needed.

you can buy a mat and rug in gokulam if you don't want to carry it with you. i choose to bring my own.

i don't know what the weather is like in the winter, but i think you still may need a sweatshirt or sweater for chilly mornings. some warm clothes for evenings. perhaps some decent clothes for a nice dinner out every once in a while. a pair of jeans. casual, comfy, loose clothes for hot days.

        any specific toiletries you need.

        earplugs are good to have.

lots of people brought their laptop - good for DVDs and Anu's has wireless. our house was wired for internet.

if you want to be social at all, bring a cell phone that can use an indian SIM card.

bring DVDs and books. you can buy cheap pirated english books on the streets in mysore or borrow books from tina's, but then you're at the mercy of bad copies or what other people have left behind.

plenty of ATMs, so no need for traveler's checks.

bring your own supplies if you think you may have sex - it's such a hush-hush topic in india - never once did i see condoms or lube for sale and i wouldn't even know how to go about finding them without being horribly embarrassed. it may be easier for a man, though.

bring rolling papers if you're a pot smoker.

if you drink and like a specific type of booze, bring it - indian booze is pretty terrible.

you can get clothes made cheaply, but i've heard it's really much better if you have an actual article of clothing for the tailor to copy. some people have tried to have clothes made from catalog photos and they turn out pretty terribly, but i don't know if that's true for men's clothes. in any case, if you have a pair of pants or a shirt you want reproduced bring them with you. and go to krishna tailor - lokesh owns it and he's the sweetest, most helpful man! tell him i sent you and give him a warm greeting from me. other tailors may be a little cheaper, but lokesh is worth it. he's in gokulam, right next to the stand-up tea stall - it's a door with steep steps leading up to his little second-floor workshop.

        ok, enough for now!

          Mary,

Thank you so much. That's the kind of nitty gritty I need. I'm getting excited about going. I should get my visa in a couple of days. I'm set to arrive in Mysore on the 8th of December and stay until the end of March. I am most likely coming from New Dehli to Bangalore. Can you recommend an airline for flights within India?

Scooter-wise. I assume you rent them?

          Again many thanks,

          David

kingfisher or spice jet, they are the newest and safest, don't fly air deccan. it's an hour and a half flight from delhi to b'lore and way better than the forty some hour train. fly. see you in mysore :)
